History

       Department was established in 1995, in Old building in Sir Takhtasinhji Hospital campus, with intake capacity of 50. In march 2000 the department was shifted to newly constructed college building near S.T. Depot.Department is located on 1st floorand have adequate cater the need of 150 students per year. In the academic year of 2006-2007,the medical coulncil of india has raised the intake capacity to 100 students per year.

Department has 1 lecture hall shared with Pharmacology department, 2 demonstration room, one library, seminar room, laboratory and store room and officer chambers.
Department is doing teaching of undergraduate ,post graduate students, attending courts for deposition of evidence as medical expert witness ,providing expert opinion in cases referred by police, judiciary ,consumer forum etc.
As present 8 candidates doing post graduation (M.D) in the department.

 

Mortuary complex situated in premises of Sir T. Hospital, Bhavangar, having P.M.Room, Viscera Room, Store Room, Laboratory Room, Servant Room, Duty Doctor Room, Waiting area for relatives & Cold storage room for 10 dead bodies.

Staff of this department is conducting all types of Post-mortems from 25/11/ 2008, as per the order of Dean, Govt. Medical College, Bhavnagar.

  • Departmental library with 114 books of Forensic Medicine & allied subjects & Number of journals
  • Department is having museum with large no. of models, wet specimens, photographs.
  • U.G. & P.G. laboratory with large no. specimens ofpoisons, weapons, anthropology lab.

(i) GOAL :
          
          The broad goal of the teaching of undergraduate students in Forensic Medicine is to produce a physician who is well informed about medicolegal responsibility in practice of medicine. He/She will also be capable of making observations and inferring conclisions by logical deductions to set enquiries on the right track in criminal matters and connected medicolegal problems. He/She acquires knowledge of law in relatopn to medical practice, medical negligence and respect for codes of medical ethics, and to prepare him to be a teacher of Forensic Medicine.

(ii) OBJECTIVES :

(a) KNOWLEDGE :
     At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
(1) Identify the basic medicolegal aspects of hospital and general practice;
(2) Define the medicolegal responsibility of a general physician while rendering community  
     service either in a rural primary health centre or an urban health centre;
(3) Appreciate the physician’s responsibilities in criminal matters and respect for the codes  
     of medical ethics;
(4) Diagnose, manage and identify legal aspects of common acute and chronic poisonings;
(5) Describe the medicolegal aspects and findings of post-mortem examination in case

Workshop for Judicial officers of Bhavnagar dist. was organized on 10-03-2007 department at Lecture hall-1 Govt. Medical College, Bhavnagar.

Museum of Forensic Medicine department have large number of charts & models, Wet Specimens, Specimens of poisons & Weapons which are frequently visited by various Schools and Institution.

Demonstration of various firearm weapons & explosive weapons was conducted on 25/09/2010 with the help of Bhavnagar police at forensic medicine dept. so residents & faculty members can understand its various aspects.
